India has the one of the largest growing middle classes in the world. With one of the fastest growing economies, clocked at a growth rate of 8.3% in 2010, India is fast on its way to becoming a large and globally important consumer economy. The Indian middle class, estimated to be 50 million people, by McKinsey & Company is fast becoming used to Western culture. It will reach 600 million by 2030.
With more than 70% of this middle class now living in the urban jungle of metros and tier 2 cities. They are attracted to glamour of foreign brands from the ubiquitous Nike trainers to the rare and exclusive Rolls Royce.
In the fashion industry, there are two major seasons per year - Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer. When the fashion season is over, the showrooms have no option but to put the out-dated stock on a clearance sale. The bulk of ‘Urban Middle Class Tribe’ mostly prefers branded clothing, but as compared to non-branded Indian products the price difference is pretty steep, unless you get it off the bi-yearly sales. Viz. June, when the spring stock is cleared and autumn in January.
If you look at it from a fashion point of view, we can say that the bulk of the urban middle class population (which makes up for a large percentage of the urban population) is one fashion season behind. They would be wearing the previous seasons clothing, i.e. during summer they would be wearing autumn and vice versa. This goes on to such an extent that just going to the fresh stock arrivals section, during a sale is considered as a mega faux pas!
Funny as it may seem, Indians are not at all bothered by this fact, rather I am not sure they are aware of this at all. They would proudly display their new attire that they bought at a 50% off sale and would not give a damn whether it is the fashion from a season back or a decade back and that is how it should be! Clothing according to me is: if it covers the essentials, you are good to go.
